Kindergarten Assessment: Free Skills Test and Printable Record

This free kindergarten assessment checks the skills kindergartners learn during the year: letters, letter sounds, sight words, rhyming, numbers, counting, shapes, and simple adding and subtracting. Give it on screen while your child looks at one big item at a time, or print the kit and record answers on paper. You’ll get a clear report of what your child knows and what to practice next.

How to give the kindergarten assessment

The assessment is one-on-one: you sit with one child, show an item, and mark whether they answer correctly. Most children finish a full check in 10 to 20 minutes.

  1. Find a quiet spot. Sit side by side so the child can see the screen or the student page and you can see the answer.
  2. Add the child and pick the skills. For a first check, the “Kindergarten screening set” covers letters, sounds, numbers, counting, and shapes.
  3. Ask the question shown in the teacher bar. The answer appears for you in small print, so you don’t need an answer key.
  4. Tap ✓ or ✗. On a computer you can press the right arrow for correct and the left arrow for not yet. Wait about 3 seconds before marking an answer as not yet.
  5. Don’t teach during the check. Stay warm and encouraging (“Good trying!”), but don’t correct or give hints. Save teaching for later.
  6. Stop if they get tired. Finished skills are saved, so you can do the rest another day.

The letters and numbers appear in mixed order, not A to Z or 1 to 20, so you can see what a child really knows rather than what they can recite.

What’s on a kindergarten assessment?

These are the skills most kindergarten assessments check, with the Common Core standard each one matches and the usual goal by the end of kindergarten.

Skill What you ask End-of-year goal
Uppercase and lowercase letters
RF.K.1d
“What letter is this?” Names all 26 uppercase and 26 lowercase letters
Letter sounds
RF.K.3a, RF.K.3b
“What sound does this letter make?” Says the main sound for each letter, including short vowel sounds
Sight words
RF.K.3c
“Read this word.” Reads common high-frequency words by sight. Schools choose their own lists.
Rhyming
RF.K.2a
“Do cat and hat rhyme?” Hears and makes rhymes
Beginning sounds
RF.K.2d
“What sound does map start with?” Hears the first sound in a word
Number names
K.CC.3
“What number is this?” Reads and writes numbers 0 to 20
Counting to 100
K.CC.1
“Count as high as you can.” Counts to 100 by ones and by tens
Counting objects
K.CC.5

When to assess: beginning, middle, and end of year

Most schools check kindergarten skills three times a year. The assessment tool keeps Fall, Winter, and Spring results side by side, so you can see each child’s growth.

  • Fall (beginning of year): a baseline. Many children start kindergarten knowing some letters and counting to 10 or 20, and that’s fine. Fall results show where to begin.
  • Winter (middle of year): a progress check. Look for growth, and add extra practice for any skill still under 60%.
  • Spring (end of year): an end-of-year kindergarten assessment. Most children have most of the skills in the table above by now.

What is kindergarten screening?

A kindergarten screening is a short check that many schools give before or at the start of kindergarten. It isn’t a pass-or-fail test. Schools use it to get to know each child and to spot children who might need extra support.

A screening often includes early reading skills (letters, sounds, rhyming), early math skills (counting, numbers, shapes), fine motor skills (holding a pencil, cutting, writing their name), and social and language skills. Some schools also check vision and hearing.

To help your child feel relaxed, practice the skills in everyday ways: point out letters on signs, count stairs, and play rhyming games. Tell your child they’ll get to play some games with a teacher. There’s no need to drill.

Kindergarten tests your school might use

Schools often use a published assessment. This free tool isn’t one of them and isn’t connected to them, but it checks many of the same early skills. Here’s a plain-English guide to the names you might hear.

  • DIBELS: short, timed one-minute tasks. In kindergarten these usually include naming letters, breaking words into sounds, reading made-up words like “vop,” and reading real words.
  • FAST (FastBridge earlyReading): used in Iowa and many other states. It checks skills like letter names and sounds, rhyming, blending and segmenting sounds, and sight words.
  • MAP Growth K-2: a computer test that gets easier or harder based on the child’s answers. It covers early reading and math.
  • Star Early Literacy: a short computer test of early reading and early math skills.
  • aimswebPlus: a screening tool with short early reading and math tasks, often given in fall, winter, and spring.
  • Brigance screens: quick checks of development and early skills, often given when children enter kindergarten.
  • CogAT: a different kind of test. It measures reasoning, not school skills, and is often used for gifted programs. At the kindergarten level the questions are picture-based, so children don’t need to read.

The best way to prepare for any of them is to practice the real skills in short, fun ways, not to memorize test questions.

Understanding the results

The report sorts each skill into three easy groups:

  • Got it (90% or more): keep it going with games and reading.
  • Almost there (60–89%): a little regular practice will help.
  • Keep practicing (under 60%): focus here with a few minutes of practice a day.

The report also lists the exact letters, words, or numbers your child missed, with a link to free practice. Print it to send home or to bring to a parent-teacher conference. These results are a guide for practice, not a diagnosis. If you’re worried about your child’s progress, talk with their teacher.

End-of-year kindergarten skills checklist

By the end of kindergarten, most children can:

  • Name all uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Say the main sound for each letter
  • Read a set of common sight words
  • Hear rhymes and the first sound in a word
  • Read simple words like cat, sun, and pig
  • Write their first name and most letters
  • Count to 100 by ones and by tens
  • Read and write numbers 0 to 20
  • Count up to 20 objects
  • Name basic flat and solid shapes
  • Add and subtract within 5
  • Tell which group has more or less

Every child grows at their own pace. A child who has some of these by spring is learning, too.

Kindergarten assessment FAQ

Is this assessment free?

Yes. The on-screen assessment, the printable kit, and the reports are all free for home and classroom use, with no sign-up.

Where are the results saved?

Only in your web browser, on the device you used. Nothing is sent to us. Results stay there until you delete them or clear your browser data. To keep a copy, print the report or download the class CSV file.

How long does the assessment take?

About 10 to 20 minutes for all the skills. You can check just a few skills at a time, and the tool shows an estimate before you start.

Can parents use it at home?

Yes. Parents can use it to see how their child is doing and what to practice. Keep it relaxed and playful, and stop if your child gets tired.

Is this the same test my child’s school uses?

No. Schools use their own assessments. This one checks many of the same kindergarten skills, so it gives you a good picture of where your child is.

What should I do if my child scores low?

Pick one skill and practice it for a few minutes a day with games and real objects. Check again in a month to see the growth. If you have concerns about learning, speech, hearing, or vision, talk with your child’s teacher or pediatrician.
